The Living Edens - Bhutan, the Last Shangri-La: Is There an Eden? | |
| Description | This lesson is designed to give students an overview of the video "The Living Edens: Bhutan, the Last Shangri-La." This lesson addresses a question that is fundamental to geography education: how and why do we perceive other places in certain ways? Students will: - contribute to a class list of words that describe Eden, paradise, and Shangri-La - use the Internet to research the meaning of the term Shangri-La - contribute to a class list of places in the world that students consider to have the qualities of paradise or Eden - draw pictures of their impressions of Eden - after viewing "The Living Edens: Bhutan, the Last Shangri-La," write a paragraph explaining whether they think Bhutan is an Eden - discuss whether they think the video provides adequate information to assess whether Bhutan is truly an Eden - write questions that they'd like to ask Bhutanese children to determine whether Bhutan lives up to its reputation as an Eden - use the Internet to research another place that they think might qualify as Eden and assess whether their impressions of that place change or remain the same after learning about it on the Internet - write an essay answering the question "Is there really an Eden?" The lesson provides a list of materials needed, estimated time, teaching strategies, and assessment recommendations, as well as extensions/adaptations. Relevant national standards in geography and social studies are also noted. |

The Living Edens - Bhutan, the Last Shangri-La: An Environmental Plan | |
| Description | This lesson has students combine their knowledge of Bhutan's Buddhist principles with a practical investigation into Bhutan's current environmental situation. Students will: - Examine a topographical map of Bhutan and a political map of South Asia and brainstorm the types of environmental pressures a country such as Bhutan might face, considering its size, topography, resources, and proximity to larger countries. - Discuss how Bhutan's Buddhist heritage has contributed to its attitudes toward environmental preservation. - After viewing a video clip, explain how Bhutan is an "oasis." - Devise a long-range environmental plan for Bhutan based on their consideration of several environmental and development-related issues. The lesson plan lists materials needed, estimated time, teaching strategies, and assessment recommendations as well as extensions/adaptations. Relevant national standards in geography and social studies are also noted. |

Lehigh Earth Observatory's Envirosci Inquiry | |
| Description | The LEO EnviroSci Inquiry Web site is a new K-12 outreach project from LEO - the Lehigh Earth Observatory and the SERVIT (Science Education Research in Visual Instructional Technologies)Group in the College of Education at Lehigh University. EnviroSci Inquiry enables teachers, students, and the public to learn about environmental science content knowledge from Lehigh University LEO scientists and interns. Learning activities actively engage participants in data collection, analyzing data, working with Global Information Systems (GIS) databases, and engaging in science-specific pedagogical practices that incorporate Web-based and other technologies to be implemented into the science classrooms. Environmental science curricular activities enable students to use Microcomputer Based (MBL) and Calculator-based laboratory (CBL) probeware, Web-based telecommunication tools, QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR), and other Internet resources to learn about environmental issues. Curricular activities will emphasize student-directed scientific discovery of their local environment aligned to the National Science Education Standards and the National Geography Standards. |
