Freedom Riders
Freedom Riders
Description:
Students will learn about the Freedom Rides of 1961. Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, protesters put themselves into danger to further the
cause of racial equality. Freedom Riders sought to test the Souths compliance to a law banning segregation on interstate buses. Riders rode interstate buses into the South where they were frequently beaten and jailed. In the end, however, the federal government pressured Southern communities into ending segregation on buses and in other public places. Students will also discuss how non-violent protest is an effective form of civil disobedience.
