Scientific Evidence: Reliable or Not? – Grade Nine
Scientific Evidence: Reliable or Not? – Grade Nine
Description:
This lesson engages students in recognizing some of the
concepts of scientific evidence (e.g., reliability and validity).
Students will be given the opportunity to read an article and
determine if it provides reliable scientific evidence.
Students will be given the opportunity to apply concepts of
scientific evidence to exemplar student lab reports and to
demonstrate whether data generated by their scientific
inquiries are, or are not, reliable and valid (e.g., make
multiple measurements, select appropriate instruments, use
instruments correctly, compare data, treat data respectfully,
control variables, measure the right variable). The lesson
also provides an opportunity for students to research and
report on information regarding other concepts of scientific
evidence (e.g., ethical processes, critical scientific peer
review) that help scientists ensure that scientific processes
construct effective and dependable knowledge about the
physical universe.
