Becoming History Detectives Using Shakespeare’s Secret

Description:
In Shakespeare’s Secret, author Elise Broach makes liberal use of the historical details surrounding William Shakespeare’s life. These details enhance the story and expose students to the real-life discussion some scholars are having regarding the possibility that Edward de Vere is the true author of the works that have long been attributed to the Bard. In this lesson, students use Broach’s novel as a springboard for exploration of the Shakespeare–de Vere debate. They explore the historical references in the text, generate questions for further research, and then create short dramatic skits that creatively connect the novel with the historical facts.
