Description:
This website consists of a Java applet, where one can select any combination of three different block sizes (repesenting a unit, 10 units, and 100 units) and drag them into the working panel. Students can then move, rotate, break, and glue the blocks to explore base 10 place value; older students in this grade band can explore multi-digit addition and subtraction. You can begin with the instructions or jump directly to the applet. A lesson plan is provided to use the applet to introduce place value. This site could be appropriate either for individual student use (if appropriate technology, tasks, and guidance are available) or as a tool for teachers to lead a full-class discussion.
