NCTM- Tetralope- 9-12 Geometry

Description:
This resource is provided through the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. NCTM is the world's largest organization devoted to the improvement of the teaching and learning of school mathematics. This activity, presented in PDF format, poses the whimsical question, "What do you get when you cross a tetrahedron with an envelope?" The resulting three-dimensional geometric figure formed when an envelope is cut and folded is dubbed a "tetralope" and becomes the basis for some interesting mathematical investigations of its properties. Students can investigate the number of faces, edges, and vertices and take measurements of perimeter, area, and surface area. They can then compare what happens with different kinds of cuts and with different sizes of envelopes. The activities that go along with the tetralope can be made easier or more challenging depending on the level of the students. The instructions provided are clear and easy to follow. The activity could be presented as an individual or group investigation.
