People Patterns Grades 3-5 Algebra

Description:
This site comes from The Annenberg/CPB partnership which was created to improve K-12 education through the use of the Web and digital satellite technology. The study of patterns is an important underlying foundation for later study of algebra, and indeed for all of mathematics. This on-line activity invites students to try to figure out who should come next in a line of people, based on some combination of attributes (such as height, color of clothes, etc.) The difficulty can be varied by changing the number of people who are initially given. One drawback is that the site doesn't keep track of your choices, making systematic trial-and-error difficult. The program seems to randomize the choices you make from turn to turn. Despite this limitation, the content is interesting and well-executed. The ability to view comments from other problem-solvers is a big plus. Additional challenges can be found by clicking on the navigation bar at the top of the window.
