Rivers for the Common Good
Rivers for the Common Good
Description:
This cross-disciplinary unit will help learners discover how our waterways are polluted and how necessary it is to keep our waterways and rivers clean. The instructor will use a thematic approach to this lesson through literature, history, math, science and social studies. Learners have the opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills acquired through meaningful voluntary service for the common good. The learners will gain knowledge and information about the Nashua River, the history of its pollution and subsequent cleansing. The learners will follow the water cycle and the effects of pollution. The learners will utilize a math analogy, using rice to simulate the action of raw sewage on the river, and finally the learners will engage in a mock trial that will emphasize the connection of the common good with the Core Democratic Values. The service activity will help them realize their role in keeping the community clean. Through reflection, learners will participate in self-evaluation and assessment. Finally, the trip to a water treatment plant will concretely demonstrate the process of cleansing the water system.
