Sports & the Law

Description:
The Constitutional Rights Foundation's Sports & the Law program draws on young people's natural interest in sports to stimulate their involvement in education. Sports & the Law uses contemporary sports issues to illustrate important aspects of law and society. In addition to the development of critical thinking and decision-making skills, the program helps students acquire citizenship skills necessary to become responsible and effective participants in the democratic process. Sports & the Law believes that good sportsmanship is good citizenship. The Sports & the Law newsletter, published two times per year, presents multidisciplinary readings and activities for students in grades 6-12. A monthly publication, The Bench Press highlights a contemporary issue concerning sports and law. Sports & the Law offers for purchase on the CRF web site a series of fully-prepared interactive classroom lesson plans for educators that include detailed instructions, background, and student handouts. Educators are encouraged to work with the Sports & the Law staff in planning and organizing a Sports & the Law activity/lesson on middle school and high school campuses. Teachers are invited to participate in Sports & the Law workshops scheduled throughout the year. This is one of several programs offered by the Constitutional Rights Foundation. CRF programs offer compelling, interesting, and effective means of educating young people about citizenship, government, politics, and the law.
