Microbe Zoo

Description:
Microbe Zoo is a colorful and informative tour of microbial ecology put into common concepts. It is simple to navigate and is written in an understandable mixture of plain language and scientific terminology. Many photographs and animations are used to depict the concepts covered. The “zoo” consists of Animal Pavilion, Dirtland, Safari Hut, Snack Bar, Space Adventure, and Water World. Each section of the zoo is a domain of information pertaining to microbial habitats. For example, Animal Pavilion discusses pathogenic and commensal microbes associated with animals and feces. Snack Bar covers food microbiology related to food poisoning and food production. Dirtland gives the most extensive coverage. It discusses microbes associated with agriculture, human habitation, industry, and soil. Up-to-date coverage based on current research is provided for most of the topics. Much of the information is cursory, and chunked into one or two paragraphs. Some of the descriptions are very brief and read like dictionary entries. The information is appropriate for advanced middle school students, high school students, and college-level students in general biology or environmental science courses. Not all the links are functional yet, and all the pages are not yet complete.
