Heart and the Circulatory System

Description:
Confusion over the nature of the heart, the blood, and the role of the blood in the body had existed for centuries. Physicians, as well as citizens, of many cultures had their own beliefs concerning the nature of the heart and circulatory system. William Harvey focused much of his research on the mechanics of blood flow in the human body. Harvey's experiments involved both direct dissection and physiological experiments on animals. His observations of dissected hearts showed that the valves in the heart allowed blood to flow in only one direction. Four activities, background information, diagrams and other resources are included with the site.
