Math Forum: Exploring Pascal's Triangle
Description:
This site comes from WebCT.com' s e-Learning Hub. Patterns blocks have long been a favorite tool for teachers to explore mathematical concepts, including geometry, fractions, and patterns. This implementation allows students to explore pattern blocks on-line in a "microworld" setting. Students can drag various pattern blocks into the working area, move them around, and rotate them to form various shapes and configurations. The working area is a triangular grid, to which the blocks automatically "snap", thereby simplifying the process. In this activity, the students choose any five colors. They assign a different color to each number and shade each block on the provided color chart accordingly. This is done using a blank Pascal Triangle grid. The students try to determine the color of the next row of cells. This activity helps students become familiar with the concepts of closure. It helps them to have a deeper understanding of the identity, inverse, and commutative properties.
