The Living Edens - Bhutan, the Last Shangri-La: Migration

Description:
In this lesson, students will examine the migrations of specific organisms in Bhutan. Students will: - observe and list the organisms living at different altitudes in the Himalayan Mountains - construct a drawing showing the mountains and the relative elevations that each organism inhabits - identify different conditions that trigger migration patterns - analyze migration patterns of a selected species to present to the class - construct a drawing showing the three major areas of Bhutan and place animals correctly at each layer for winter and summer habitation - obtain migration information from the Internet on a species of interest to students and plot the movements - understand the life cycle of organisms regarding life, growth, and death - predict what cues an organism uses to trigger migrations. The lesson provides a list of materials needed, estimated time, teaching strategies, and assessment recommendations, as well as extensions/adaptations. Relevant national standards in science are also noted.
