The West - Making Myths: The West in Public and Private Writings
The West - Making Myths: The West in Public and Private Writings
Description:
Students read selections from the works of Bret Harte, Owen Wister, Zane Grey, and Willa Cather, and determine how their works came to typify a western mythic image. Students then contrast these versions of the West with the diaries and letters of the pioneers who documented their own travails. Lastly, students read works of contemporary western authors, comparing their images of the West with those of the previously read authors.
