This lesson asks students to view westward expansion from the perspective of the Nez Perce and their leader, Chief Joseph. Students will view segments of "The West" video, perform role-playing activities, analyze the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887, and participate in class discussion and debate about the social, political, and historical circumstances surrounding the passage of the act itself.
